Helping every child to thrive

In addition to each class having a dedicated Teaching Assistant, who provides continuity and a familiar face in all lessons, we also have the support of specially trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs), to support the emotional and social well-being of our pupils.

Whether it be a short term need triggered by a one off event, such as the arrival of a new baby at home, or a need for more ongoing support, our ELSAs are on hand to help children navigate their emotions, build resilience, and develop essential social skills. Little children can find it hard to make sense of big feelings and our ELSAs can work with those who are struggling to manage how they feel, and how they respond to things, in an appropriate manner.

Curious, not Furious
This commitment to support is part of our school-wide approach to behaviour – to be Curious, not Furious. We recognise that behaviour is a form of communication. Young children may struggle to find the right words to explain their emotions. Instead, their behaviour often provides a valuable insight into what they are experiencing.

Rather than simply seeing certain behaviours as mischief or defiance, we take the time to ask the next question: Why might this be happening? By knowing each of our pupils as individuals, we're able to identify when something feels different for them. A small change in behaviour might be a signal that they need support, and by being curious, we show children that we're interested in them, so they feel safe and secure to open up about their feelings.

Of course, boundaries remain important – helping children understand right from wrong is an important part of their development. Clear boundaries and consequences are put in place to help children who need support in managing their behaviour. However, by understanding the reasons behind behaviour, we can respond in a way that supports both their emotional well-being and their development by guiding them towards positive choices.
